I've been hearing a lot about the importance of “coming together” in the aftermath of the US election.
My initial reaction - amidst the frustration, the anger, and the fear I felt - was...
You want us to what?! "They" don't even want me in this country.
Now that those initial emotions have subsided, I'm able to think coherently and rationally.
And I realized...
Why are the oppressed always the ones compromising and working with the privileged? Think about what is wrong with that notion.
We need to address that. Don’t tell me that this will make our country even more divisive. It IS divisive. And, the people in power have to acknowledge that.
Y’all gotta check your privilege.
Why is it that it’s the POC that have to meet on white people’s terms?
White people gotta check their privilege.
Why is it that women have to meet on men’s terms?
Men gotta check their privilege.
Why is it that gay people have to meet on straight people’s terms?
Straight people gotta check their privilege.
(Curveball here, you thought this was an anti-Trump supporter essay, didn’t you? But nah, we gotta stand by blue collar folk because they’re hurting too.)
Why is it that the working classes have to meet on rich people’s terms?
Rich people gotta check their privilege.
The oppressed will stand together. We will stand firm. We will make noise. And, when those in power are ready to work together on the basis that we’re equal human beings. Then, we’ll talk.
On another note, I was harsh on Trump supporters up until a few hours ago.
I’m still harsh on them - just in a more rational way than I was before. If they want to work together, they have to stand by everyone else. You do not get to have your working class needs addressed AND keep your white privilege.
You need to stand with us and support our needs as well.
We got your back regardless. But we won’t respect you unless you return the same respect.
That goes for everyone - POCs, women, LGBTQ, religious groups, etc. You don’t get to pick and choose who gets equal rights.
If you want rights as a POC. You support women.
If you want rights as a woman. You support religious freedom.
And, so on.
You support one, you support everyone. Otherwise, you’re a hypocrite.
